For our semester project, my partner Cayman and I decided to test the resistance of different types of gum. Our testing gums ranged from being sugar free to containing 3 grams of sugar. The gum types we included were as follows: 5, Extra, Juicy Fruit, Quench, Stride, Trident, Trident Splash, and UP 2 U. We sandwiched the chewed gum between two cups and pulled apart to find the resistance of each gum in Newtons. What we learned was, one, Quench gum is the most resistant of the listed gums, and two, the amount of sugar in the gum does not contribute to its resistance. What I liked best about this project was chewing the gum during the project, and keeping it after. Though doing this project was fun, I still wish we would have done my first idea of using Tesla coils experiment something else. I believe this would have been more advanced, more fun to do, and also much more exciting to the class than just pulling gum apart.
